Arne Jacobsen’s sumptuous Lily chair celebrates its 50th birthday. To mark its 50th anniversary, the Lily chair, with its chromed steel base, is dressed in walnut. This is the first time Fritz Hansen has made a walnut version of the Lily seat, as technically it is extremely difficult to make curved armrests in this material without the outer veneer cracking. The corners of the armrests and the grain of the wood make this process complex, but when it is done perfectly it is magnificent. By using walnut, Fritz Hansen has created a unique and unforgettable version of this model. Arne Jacobsen’s latest creation and originally designed for the National Bank of Denmark, the Lily chair was called Series 8. The 1st version without armrests was made in 1968. A 2nd model with armrests was introduced in 1970 at a Danish design exhibition. The chair was also called “Seagull.”
