Poul Henningsen designed the lampshade set in 1925-26, a lighting system based on the logarithmic spiral, creating direct, glare-free light while producing soft shadows. The first lamps using this system were designed by Poul Henningsen in cooperation with Louis Poulsen for a show in Paris. Based on the same lampshade set concept, the PH80 lamp was created in 1974, after the death of Poul Henningsen, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his birth – hence the name PH 80. Most of the light from the PH 80 floor lamp is directed downwards and the opalised acrylic shades provide pleasant illumination in the room.
