In addition to his industrial design projects, Ronan Bouroullec is also an artist. He creates intricate drawings in which he hand-paints repeated line sequences using a Japanese brush. The contours of Courier can be seen as an expression of this artistic flair, but they also reflect Ronan Bouroullec’s eye for form and composition, as well as his technical expertise: the desk effortlessly combines two high-quality materials—wood and aluminium—to form a piece that is both distinctive and understated. Courier thus joins George Nelson’s Home Desk, Jean Prouvé’s Compas Direction, and Charles and Ray Eames’ EDU in a collection of aesthetically compelling objects that function both as desks and as sculptural pieces. When viewed from the side, the desk’s silhouette resembles the outline of a serif letter—hence the name Courier, one of the most well-known serif typefaces.
