A great admirer of Alexander Calder, Bernard Schottlander created a series of lamps and luminaires called MANTIS in 1951. Playing on the tension between balance and imbalance, his luminaires, like mobiles, seem to defy the laws of gravity.The Mantis collection is now published by DCW éditions. The Mantis BS3 table lamp reissued by DCW éditions puts the spotlight back on the work and source of inspiration of Bernard Schottlander, creator of these magnificent Mantis table lamps. Movement is the source of inspiration for all Schottlander’s work: as an artist, engineer and tinkerer, he developed a clever system of pivots and counterweights, and used flexible, resistant metal rods.
